What Is the MCCQE Part 1 Exam?

The MCCQE Part 1 (Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Examination Part 1) is a one-day, computer-based exam that assesses the competencies required to enter supervised medical practice in Canada. It is based on the MCC Objectives and tests both knowledge and clinical decision-making. A pass is a core step toward the LMCC and is widely used in the residency (CaRMS) process.

💡 Two formats in one exam

Part 1 blends standard MCQs with the distinctive Clinical Decision-Making (CDM) component. Because CDM rewards focused, safe choices and penalises unnecessary ones, practising its format specifically — not just MCQs — is essential.

Pass~226 (set by MCC)

✓ Don't over-order in CDM

CDM penalises unnecessary or harmful actions. Practise choosing the focused, appropriate investigations and management — more is not better, and the format rewards clinical restraint.

MCCQE Part 1 High-Yield Areas

  • Internal Medicine: the largest share — common diagnoses, investigation and management.
  • Surgery & Emergency: the acute patient, focused work-up and safe disposition.
  • Paediatrics: development, common presentations and safeguarding.
  • Obstetrics & Gynaecology: antenatal care, common emergencies and women's health.
  • Psychiatry: diagnosis, first-line management and risk.
  • Population Health, Ethics & CanMEDS: prevention, communication, professionalism and patient safety.
💡 Think Canadian context & CanMEDS

The MCCQE rewards safe management aligned with Canadian practice and the CanMEDS roles. Practising guideline-based questions trains you to recognise the expected, appropriate answer.
